The 20 Most Common Customer Service Interview Questions and How to Answer Them

Customer service interviews in the UAE are very similar, whether at a telecom company, a bank, an airline or a call centre. The good news is that the questions are predictable, and anyone who prepares well easily outperforms those who walk in unprepared.

Here are the 20 most frequent questions, in four groups, with how to answer each one.

Before you start: the STAR method for behavioural questions

Many questions begin with “Tell me about a time when...”. The best way to answer them is the STAR method:

  • S – Situation: describe the situation briefly.
  • T – Task: what was required of you?
  • A – Action: what exactly did you do? (the most important part)
  • R – Result: what was the outcome? Ideally positive and measurable.

If you have no work experience, you can use situations from your studies, volunteering or even personal life that show communication skills and patience.

Group 1: getting-to-know-you questions

1. Tell me about yourself.

Don't recite your CV. Give a one-minute summary: your background, your strongest people skill and why you are applying for this particular job. See how to answer “Tell me about yourself”.

2. Why do you want to work in customer service?

Link your answer to something real: you enjoy solving problems, you like helping people, or you want to build a career in customer experience. Avoid “because I need a job”.

3. What do you know about our company?

Read about the company before the interview: its services, its customers and any recent news. Mentioning one accurate detail makes a strong impression.

4. What are your strengths and weaknesses?

Choose a strength linked to the job (patience, listening, two languages) with an example. For the weakness, mention something real that isn't central to the job and explain what you are doing to improve it.

5. Where do you see yourself in three years?

Show a wish to grow in the field: team leader, trainer or quality specialist. This reassures the company that you won't leave quickly.

Group 2: handling customers

6. What is excellent customer service to you?

A strong answer combines speed, accuracy and empathy: “The customer gets the right solution to their problem as quickly as possible, and feels heard and respected.”

7. How do you handle an angry customer?

Give clear steps: listen without interrupting, show empathy (“I understand your frustration”), apologise for the experience, focus on the solution, then follow up. You can mention the HEARD method: Hear, Empathise, Apologise, Resolve, Diagnose/thank. See 7 steps for handling angry customers.

8. What do you do if a customer asks for something against company policy?

Stick to the policy while offering an alternative: “I politely explain why the request isn't possible, offer the best available option and escalate to my supervisor if needed.”

9. What do you do if you don't know the answer to a customer's question?

Honesty beats guessing: “I tell the customer I'll check, look at internal resources or ask a colleague or supervisor, then come back with the correct answer at the time I promised.”

10. How do you cope with a high volume of calls?

Talk about time management, focusing on one customer at a time, taking a short breath between calls and following the Call Flow to speed up service without sacrificing quality.

11. Tell me about a time you exceeded a customer's expectations.

Use STAR. Pick a simple situation with a clear result: a follow-up the customer didn't ask for, or solving an extra problem you noticed.

12. How do you deal with a customer who is rude?

Stay calm and professional and don't respond in kind. Make clear you want to help, and if the abuse continues, follow the company's escalation policy.

Group 3: skills and work questions

13. Have you used a CRM system before?

If you have, name the system. If not, say you learn systems quickly and mention any training or similar systems you have used.

14. How do you handle feedback or criticism from a supervisor?

Show a learning mindset: “I see feedback as a chance to improve. I listen, ask exactly what's expected, then apply it.”

15. Do you prefer working alone or in a team?

Customer service needs both: you work one-to-one with the customer, but you are part of a team that shares knowledge and covers peaks. Show you are comfortable with both.

16. Are you willing to work shifts and weekends?

Many customer service jobs in the UAE run on shifts. Answer honestly and show your flexibility if you have it.

17. How would you measure your success in this role?

Mention metrics such as customer satisfaction (CSAT), first contact resolution (FCR) and average handling time. Knowing these terms shows you are serious.

Group 4: closing questions

18. Why should we hire you?

Sum up in three points: strong communication skills, two languages and readiness to learn fast, with a short example for each if possible.

19. What salary do you expect?

Research the average salary for the role in the UAE before the interview and give a reasonable range instead of one number, while showing flexibility. See how to answer the salary question.

20. Do you have any questions for us?

Always say yes. Ask, for example: “What does training look like in the first month?” or “What sets successful employees in your team apart?”

Final tips for interview day

  • For online interviews: test your internet, camera and audio well in advance, and choose a quiet place.
  • Speak clearly and with a smile; in customer service, how you speak is part of the assessment.
  • Prepare three situations from your experience that you can use for several questions.
  • Practise out loud; knowing the answer is different from saying it confidently.
