“What are your salary expectations?” usually comes up in the first call or at the end of the interview. A rushed answer can make you ask for less than you deserve, or more than the role's budget so you lose it.
Before the interview: know the realistic range
- Search the job title and city on sites such as Indeed, Glassdoor and Bayt.
- Be clear on the difference between basic salary and total salary (including housing, transport and other allowances).
- Compare by sector: banking, aviation and telecoms differ from retail.
- Work out your real monthly needs (rent, transport, living costs) so you know your minimum acceptable figure.
For customer service roles specifically, see customer service salaries in the UAE.
During the interview: 3 ways to answer
1. Give a range, not a single number
Make the bottom of your range a number you would genuinely accept.
2. Politely ask about the budget first
3. Stay flexible while anchoring on value
Common mistakes
- “Any salary is fine”: suggests you don't know your worth.
- Justifying with personal needs: the company pays for skills, not for your rent.
- Not asking about benefits: housing, transport, insurance and leave change the whole picture.
- Accepting on the spot: it is perfectly normal to ask for a day to think.
What if you have no experience?
Focus on getting the right start. Ask about the range, say you are flexible in exchange for a clear learning opportunity, and explain that the training you completed makes you productive from the first days.

FAQ
Should I give an exact number when asked about expected salary?
It's better to give a researched range based on the market average, with a lower end you would genuinely accept.
What is the difference between basic and total salary in the UAE?
Basic salary is the fixed core of your pay; total salary adds allowances such as housing and transport. Make clear which one you mean.
Can I negotiate salary after receiving an offer?
Yes. Thank the company, ask for a short time to consider, then discuss salary or benefits politely based on market averages.
