“Tell me about yourself” is the first question in most job interviews. It sounds easy, but it sets the first impression, and many people stumble: they recite their whole CV or talk about their personal life.
What does the interviewer want to hear?
Not your life story. In about one minute they want to know: who are you professionally, and why do you fit this job? They also want to see how confidently and clearly you speak.
The formula: present, past, future
- Present: who are you now? (your title, field, or most recent training).
- Past: what experience or skill makes you a good fit? (one example or achievement).
- Future: why do you want this job at this company?

Mistakes to avoid
- Reciting your whole CV: the interviewer has read it; give them the highlights.
- Personal details: age, marital status and hobbies unrelated to the job.
- A long answer: over two minutes and you lose the listener.
- Word-for-word memorising: memorise the points, not the sentences, so you sound natural.
- Starting with “There's not much to say”: this question is your opportunity, not a trap.
Practise before the interview
- Write your answer in bullet points using the three-part formula.
- Record it on your phone and listen back.
- Trim it until it lasts 60 to 90 seconds.
- Prepare both an Arabic and an English version.
